Vía Zoom y Facebook Live conversé con el cónsul general de México en Nueva York, Jorge Islas López, sobre cómo sigue respondiendo el consulado a los efectos de la pandemia en la comunidad mexicana y los nuevos desafíos de las complicadas relaciones con la policía. El consulado mexicano ha ayudado con la repatriación de los restos mortales de unos 800 mexicanos fallecidos en el área triestatal por la pandemia COVID-19. También, a través de donaciones de comerciantes mexicanos, han estado repartiendo despensas de alimentos a la comunidad.

En la columna Dignidad para todes, Paola Betchart, del Centro de Justicia Laboral, habló sobre seguridad en pesticidas y COVID-19. Via Zoom and Facebook Live, I spoke with the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, on how the consulate continues to respond to the effects of the pandemic in the Mexican community and the new challenges of complicated relations with the police. If you have experienced discrimination based on origin or skin color, you can call the consulate for help and referrals at 917-459-2143. The Mexican consulate has helped with the repatriation of the mortal remains of some 800 Mexicans who died in the tri-state area due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, through donations from Mexican merchants, the consulate has been distributing food through food pantries to the community.

In the Dignity for Everyone column, Paola Betchart, from the Center for Labor Justice, spoke about pesticide safety and COVID-19. Today more than ever, as consumers, we must look for organic products, or buy food that has gone through pesticides and that has caused a lot of pain and disease to those who harvest it for us.
