Homeschooling and the right to dream

I talked with Elizabeth Murichi, a Peruvian mother living in Kingston who does home schooling, which is not the same as remote learning. Murichi explained to us what education outside of the educational system is. This is an option that many parents take and one she has been practicing since before the pandemic. How does it work? What resources are available?

In her column, Let’s talk about economics, professor Martha Tepepa from the Levy Institute of Economics at Bard College explored the idea, if capitalism is exploitative and racist, and what use is it possible for us, what possible world do we want? Tepepa relied on a piece by Uruguayan thinker Eduardo Galeano, The right to dream, to give her answer.

“The right to dream is not among the thirty human rights that the United Nations proclaimed at the end of 1948. But if it were not for it, and for the waters it gives us to drink, the other rights would die out of thirst. Let’s rave for a little while. The world, which is turned upside down, will stand on its feet:

* The air will be clean of the poisons of the machines and will have no more pollution than that which emanates from human fears and human passions.

* People will not be driven by the car, nor will they be programmed by the computer, nor will they be bought by the supermarket, nor will they be watched by the television.

* People will work to live, instead of living to work.

* Economists will not call the standard of living the consumption level nor will they call the quantity of things quality of life.

* Historians will not believe that countries love to be invaded.

* Politicians will not believe that the poor love to eat promises.

* The world will no longer be at war against the poor, but against poverty, and the military industry will have no choice but to declare bankruptcy forever and ever.

* Nobody will die out of hunger, because nobody will die from indigestion.

* Justice and freedom, Siamese sisters condemned to live apart, will come back together, very close, back to back.

* A black woman will be president of Brazil, and another black woman will be president of the United States of America. One Indian woman will rule Guatemala, and the another Peru. “

In addition, journalist Amy Goodman opined on how “Trump Rightly Vetoes Pentagon Budget, for the Wrong Reasons.”
