Live from the Kingston City School District

This week in La Voz en Breve, journalist Mariel Fiori has a show on education and family. She had her first live remote broadcast program in six months. Rain and all they went to the Kingston City School District on National Day of Action to support children and demand safe schools. Nearly 100 district parents in less than 48 hours signed a petition requesting the district for necessary changes to the 2020-21 school plan. Superintendent Dr. Paul Padalino came out of the school building to pick up the letter and joined us for a brief interview. He said he will review the letter and send it to the Board of Education for evaluation. Among other things, the letter asks for autonomy for the Kingston teachers to have the option of choosing to teach online from their homes (where their children are) or from school buildings - something many area districts already allow their teachers to do, but not in Kingston. The letter is here and organizing parents, myself included, are still accepting signatures. 

Zoe Dunn, the mother who delivered this petition spoke with her, as well as, Jimmy Buff, Executive Director of Radio Kingston, the host of the daily show, Jimmy Loves You, and our technician during the event. Both spoke from the perspective of parents with students in the school district. She will continue to cover this ongoing conversation. 

 In addition, Amy Goodman gave her take on the police shooting against Jacob Blake, the peaceful protests in repudiation of the police shooting and the voices of professional athletes.

Esta semana en La Voz en breve, la periodista Mariel Fiori tiene un programa de educación y familia. Es el primer programa remoto en seis meses. Con lluvia y todo se acercaron al distrito escolar de la ciudad de Kingston en el día Nacional de Acción para apoyar a los niños y demandar escuelas seguras. Casi 100 padres del distrito en menos de 48 horas firmaron una carta solicitándole al distrito cambios necesarios al plan de la escuela 2020-21. El Superintendente Dr. Paul Padalino salió a recoger la carta y dijo que la revisaría y enviaría a la junta educativa para su evaluación. Entre otras cosas, se pide que los maestros de Kingston tengan la opción de elegir dar clases online desde sus casas (donde están sus niños) o desde los edificios escolares -algo que muchos distritos del área ya hacen con sus maestros, pero no en Kingston. La carta se encuentra aquí y todavía acepta firmas.
