Jael Brooks, a registered nurse at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers, described the nearly deadly toll the Coronavirus pandemic has had on her and other health workers as they confront the crisis in a region with the highest number of confirmed cases in Westchester County. Brooks said that with a close colleague and a hospital supervisor now on ventilators, she has been told unofficially to attend patients —many of them Latinos —for only five minutes to prevent contracting the virus herself. Brooks, originally from Venezuelan, had a special message for the Latino community, since this week the peak of the pandemic will be the highest hospitals in the state of New York would have seen so far.
