Show Notes

This week in La Voz en Breve, journalist Mariel Fiori has a show on immigration and culture, and news. This past summer, 60 young college students who were working in an unpaid internship for the local organization Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson were laid off after just 3 weeks for having presented a list of demands for greater awareness and changes about black lives. She spoke with four of the fired students (Estella and Luna from Vassar College, and Gaby and Skylar from Bard College) about their experience to better understand the ins and outs of a situation that seems quite unfair and unusual. Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson is a fast-growing grassroots organization in the state, which among other functions, according to its website, runs campaigns from Healthcare for All, Housing for All, and Independent Political Party Organization to ongoing campaigns for Justice of Immigration, Climate and Energy Justice, and Civic Engagement. The students, along with other members of the community affected by the organization, created a web page called Against the Machine with more details.

She spoke with four of the 60 students that did an internship via Zoom this summer for the Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson organization to raise funds to support local candidates. After three weeks of unpaid work, they were fired for apparently making too many demands in favor of greater awareness for black lives.

She also spoke with Vanessa Cid and Diana López, community organizers from Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, to tell us, from their perspective, what happened, and if they could have done something different. Jonathan Bix, Executive Director of the organization, was invited to the interview but had an emergency and did not attend.
