This week in La Voz en Breve, journalist Mariel Fiori has a show on business and education.
She spoke with Susan Gillespie of Citizens for Local Power about Central Hudson's rate hike, which she calls a catastrophe. Central Hudson has changed its billing system, which has generated a lot of errors; another problem has been that many users who signed up for community solar energy have not received a bill; and the latest news, that bills are increasing by more than 40% due to the global increase in the price of fossil fuels, make it necessary for consumers to get to work, individually and collectively, to respond to the situation. New York State utility customers owe more than $1.7 billion in debt to gas and electric companies since the pandemic began. Gillespie recommends calling our representatives, Senator Hinchey and Assemblyman Cahill, to ask them to support Senator Parker's (Chair of the Committee on Energy and Telecommunications) bill that would forgive all of this debt (one-half would be paid through federal funds and the other half would be put up by the shareholders of the private companies that run these public companies, such as Central Hudson). On the other hand, Central Hudson customers are the ones who pay the highest percentage of their income on their electricity and gas bills. Consumers can also call the Ulster County Utilities Office at 845-334-5000 to find out if they qualify for HEAP and other financial help to pay their bills.
In Speaking from the Heart, What They Were Not Told, teacher Maritza Del Razohonored the recently deceased African-American feminist bell hooks, who has not been given enough credit for her contributions. In the week when we celebrate love and friendship, Del Razo discussed hook's book All About Love, available in English at local libraries.

Conversó con Susan Gillespie de Citizens for Local Power sobre el aumento de las tarifas de Central Hudson, que considera una catástrofe.
